Border Patrol, migrants clash at border

During a second attempt, migrants began to pass youngsters over razor wire used along the border to the U.S. side.

Customs and Border Protection officials also said that at least 25 people were apprehended, but they did not give any details where the group were detained.

Border Protection said adults were attempting to move "toddler-sized children" across the border through the barbed wire but that hurled rocks prevented the agents from helping the children in distress.

One US border official called the group of around 150 migrants who attempted to breach the fence between the Tijuana side to San Diego "a violent mob".

The United States has also pushed Mexico to house Central American migrants while they seek US asylum.

USA border patrol have deployed tear gas against migrants in Tijuana, just across San Diego.

Border patrol officers responded by firing smoke, pepper spray and tear gas at the rock throwers in Mexico, distinguishing them from those who were trying to cross the fence line, CBP said.

U.S. security forces have engaged with migrants at the country's southern border with Mexico.

"Shortly thereafter, migrants began throwing rocks over the fence at the CBP agents and officers".

In footage provided by Reuters, a man is seen picking up and throwing a tear gas canister back over the barrier while a group of Spanish-speaking migrants cheers and whoops loudly.

Hasina heading for landslide win after deadly Bangladesh election day
The opposition says more than 15,000 of its activists have been detained, crushing its ability to mobilise its grassroots support. Bangladesh is a country of 165 million but turnout was reported to be low with the prime minister predicted to win so easily.

Clouds of the noxious gas could be seen wafting up from around the fence at the border.

On a second attempt, migrants began passing children over the razor wire along the fence to get them across.

The AP photographer saw rocks thrown only after USA agents fired the tear gas.

U.S. authorities fired tear gas into Mexico during the first hours of the new year to repel about 150 migrants who were trying to breach the border fence in Tijuana.

Those calls have been met with resistance on Capitol Hill, where Democrats say they won't approve any increase in funding for the president's border wall, and say the people attempting to force their way into the US are refugees fleeing violence back home in Central America, and should be given a chance at asylum.

Customs and Border Protection said that under its use of force policy, the incident would be reviewed by its Office of Professional Responsibility.

Amnesty International described the use of tear gas against migrants "cruel and inhumane" and called for an investigation. Others have found jobs in Mexico and tried to settle there.

Ms. Waldman said President Trump's proposed border wall could have helped in this case.

Waldman, however, used the incident on January 1, to prop up US President Donald Trump's idea of a $5bn border fence on the border with Mexico.
