Barr Vows To Let Mueller Finish His Russia Work - And Promises 'Transparency'

Attorney General nominee William Barr said that, if confirmed, he would let special counsel Robert Mueller finish his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and believes the results should be made public.

"I believe it is in the best interest of everyone - the President, Congress, and, most importantly, the American people - that this matter be resolved by allowing the Special Counsel to complete his work", Barr said.

During his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, attorney general nominee William Barr was asked by Sen.

"Mr. Barr has expressed some very broad views of executive authority and he's also expressed a very strong view that a president can not be criminally charged", Jennifer Daskal, Associate Professor of Law at American University, told Cheddar on Monday.

Is Barr willing to submit to a Justice Department ethics review to determine whether he can oversee the Mueller investigation, given the 19 page unsolicited memo he wrote opposing it?

Barr says pressuring "chronic, violent criminals", protecting free speech rights, enforcing immigration laws and "fostering confidence" in election outcomes would be his priorities as attorney general. He heaped praise on Mueller and said it would be hard to imagine a situation arising in which he would fire Mueller for cause.

Clinton, the former Democratic presidential nominee, jumped on the latest revelations, tweeting debate footage from 2016 in which she blasted Trump for bending to Putin's will and writing: "Like I said: A puppet". He also repeatedly sought to assuage concerns that he might disturb or upend special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation as it reaches its final stages.

Mueller is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign and potential obstruction of justice.

Meghan will continue in her role as joint-patron for The Royal Foundation, which was set up by Princes William and Harry. Buckingham Palace said that "patronages generally reflect the interests of the member of the Royal Family involved".

Barr's confirmation is likely, given that Republicans control the Senate. He said believes Russian Federation attempted to interfere with the election and said he support an investigation "to get to bottom of it".

Mr Barr sought to assure senators on the Senate judiciary committee in Tuesday's hearing that he is no Trump loyalist.

Sen. Dick Durbin, of IL, on ABC's "This Week" said he wants "ironclad assurances" of Barr's independence and willingess to let Mueller finish his probe.

He said he raised his concerns at a lunch past year with the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller and oversees his work.

"We've got a lot of problems at the Department of Justice", Graham said.

Barr will tell senators the Justice Department can not allow people to flout America's legal system by "crashing in through the back door".

"As Attorney General, my allegiance will be to the rule of law, the Constitution, and the American people", Barr said. He said presidents can not be criminally investigated for actions they are permitted to take under the Constitution, such as firing officials who work for them, just because of a subjective determination that they may have had a corrupt state of mind.

Typically, the Attorney General is the one with the power to fire a special counsel. Acknowledging that he was "in the dark about many facts", Barr repudiated Mueller's obstruction of justice theory as "fatally misconceived" and "premised on a novel and legally unsupportable reading of the law".
