South Korea stops calling North 'main enemy'

Donald Trump has sent a letter to Kim Jong-un, a media report said Tuesday, days after the US President said he received a "great letter" from the reclusive North Korean leader, amid talks about a second summit between them on denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

Kim arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport Thursday evening and was spotted leaving the airport with US Special Representative to North Korea Steve Biegun and Pak Chol, a North Korean official who's the chairman of the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee.

Pompeo, who made several trips to Pyongyang past year, sought to meet his counterpart last November, but the talks were called off at the last minute. The meeting will likely be followed by a Kim visit to the White House, where he could meet with Trump, according to two officials, who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Ministry of National Defense has removed its definition of North Korea as the "main enemy" in its latest defense white paper, reflecting of the ongoing inter-Korean reconciliation.

Washington and Pyongyang have yet to decide on a time and location for a second Kim-Trump summit but are aiming for early this year, according to USA officials.

Lee briefed Kong on the South Korean position on recent events: Kim Jong Un has expressed a willingness for talks in his New Year's Day address, the recent China-North Korea summit signaled progress.

Personnel exchanges between the two Koreas have increased sharply since North Korea abruptly began talks early past year with a vague promise of denuclearization.

Officials will discuss matters relating to North Korea and its nuclear program, although the schedule remains under discussion, he said.

Under tension-easing agreements reached after Moon's summit with Kim Jong Un in September, the two Koreas demolished some of their front-line guard posts, established buffer zones along their frontier and demilitarized a shared border village.

The talks had stalled over North Korea's refusal to provide a detailed accounting of its nuclear and missile facilities that would be used by inspectors to verify any deal to dismantle them.

"Even if the two Koreas have repeated military confrontations and reconciliations, a new security environment has been established here following three rounds of inter-Korean summits and a U.S".

Asked about the prospect of Kim Yong Chol visiting Washington for the second time in less than a year, the U.S. State Department demurred, telling The Japan Times that it did not have any meetings to announce.

Kim Yong-chol was expected to stay in the USA for two days, but it has emerged that he has booked his return flight for Saturday afternoon.

However, there has been no indication of any narrowing of differences over USA demands that North Korea abandon a nuclear weapons program that threatens the United States or over Pyongyang's demand for a lifting of punishing sanctions. -North Korea talks as saying that the envoy would be carrying a new letter for Trump. -North Korea summit that Pyongyang can accept.
