Petra Kvitova: 'Just a few people believed I could do it again'

Osaka secured her second grand slam title with a 7-6 (2) 5-7 6-4 victory over Petra Kvitova in a high-quality final on Rod Laver Arena.

On Monday, when the new tennis rankings are updated, the Japanese-born Osaka, who is now ranked No. 5 in the world, will move all the way to the top, becoming the first Asian player of any gender to hold the No. 1 spot, according to The Telegraph.

It had appeared Osaka was headed for a straight-sets win when she held three championship points at 5-3 in the second on the Kvitova serve.

There was little between them in the tense 51 minute set.

After Kvitova double-faulted to offer up a break point at 1-all, Osaka converted it with a cross-court backhand victor.

Petra Kvitova said she "already won two years ago" as the victim of a knife attack in 2016 put things into perspective following her defeat to Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open final.

Just as Serena Williams, the last woman to win back-to-back Grand Slams, became the queen of a millennial generation's yearning for empowerment and self-belief, Osaka could succeed her as the queen of whatever Generation Z becomes. "I didn't know if I going to hold the racquet again". Not to mention, she is now a back-to-back Grand Slam victor. The two-time Wimbledon victor will be no.2 in the world thanks to her runner-up trophy, something she never thought might happen. "It's been a while in a final for me", said an emotional Kvitova.

"I read notes before this but I still forgot the rest of what I was supposed to say", Osaka said with a laugh.

"I want to be the very best", she said.

"Congratulations to the 2x Grand Slam champion, @Naomi_Osaka!", she tweeted. She then squealed in agony as Kvitova broke her again to take the second set on a double fault. "At the same time I was just trying to focus on playing the match". Behind a tennis player is always a team and I am really grateful, so thank you guys.

Osaka managed to stop the rot, though, making it 1-1 in the third set as her coach Sascha Bajin leapt to his feet and shouted encouragement.

"It's insane, I can't believe I just played a final of a Grand Slam again".

By winning the first set, Naomi Osaka extended her run of winning tour matches where she has taken the opening set, to 60, comfortably the longest active streak on the women's tour. In the first set and for much of the second, her play was effortless.

MELBOURNE-With a resilience forged in the strife-torn US Open final, Naomi Osaka clinched her second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Saturday, but this time there was no drama that could sour her triumph. But Kvitova played terrifically there, while Osaka began to get jittery.

But the Czech star - who was competing again five months after the attack at the 2017 French Open - made it back to a grand slam decider for the first time in five years at the Australian Open this week.
