Australia backs Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president

One of those nations is the United States, with President Donald Trump recognizing Guaidó as Venezuela's new leader.

As Juan Guaidó, who was declared interim president by Venezuela's National Assembly last week, appealed to the country's military for support, Nicolas Maduro has responded by flooding his Twitter account with photos and videos of him with Venezuelan soldiers.

France and Britain on Saturday joined Spain and Germany in turning up the pressure on Maduro, saying they would follow the USA and others in recognizing Guaido unless Venezuela called new presidential elections within eight days.

Soldiers are seen at a military headquarter as opposition supporters (not pictured) give out copies of amnesty measures to anyone in the military who disavows President Nicolas Maduro, in Caracas, Venezuela, Jan. 27, 2019.

Maduro said he wants peace, But he announced more military games next month which he says will be "the most important in the history of Venezuela".

But as the deadline expired, Maduro said he had begun negotiations to set up within 30 days an Interests Section in Caracas to maintain a minimum level of diplomatic contact, similar to the arrangement the United States had with Cuba until their 2015 rapprochement.

Australia has joined the USA in backing Juan Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela.

Mr Maduro said the display showed the world he had the backing of the military and that Venezuela's armed forces were ready to defend the country.

In an interview with Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk aired on Sunday and dubbed into Turkish from Spanish, Maduro said Guaido had violated the constitution by declaring himself leader.

Trump administration also said Monday it would block 7$ billion in assets of Venezuela's state-run oil company.

The 35-day-long shutdown over President Trump's demand for border wall funding forced some federal workers to head to food shelters or fall behind on their rent.

Both Mr Guaido and Mr Maduro's communications minister, Jorge Rodriguez, have said Mr Guaido has met with Maduro-aligned officials.

Maduro has backed down on his order to shut down the USA embassy in Caracas and the expulsion of all US diplomats.

Maduro also noted that the western media portrayed the coup attempt as "something good" for Turkey, and they opposed Erdogan.

The show of force was accompanied by a government publicity campaign online based on the slogan "Always Loyal, Never A Traitor", and followed a high-profile defection by the country's top military diplomat in the U.S. last Saturday. France, Germany and Spain threatened to follow the USA in recognizing Guaido as the true leader.

"They sabotage us and try to destroy the economic system".

Russian Federation has helped Maduro's government with loans and weapons exports.

He said he "will continue to use the full weight of United States economic and diplomatic power to press for the restoration of Venezuelan democracy".
