Supreme Court bars Guaido from leaving Venezuela, freezes accounts

Pence will meet hold a roundtable at a local church in the Doral area of greater Miami, where many Venezuelan exiles have established themselves since the socialist government of Hugo Chavez, Maduro's predecessor and mentor, came to power 20 years ago. He was deposed for less than 48 hours until overwhelming popular support and loyalists in the military helped return him to power. Instead, in the case of Venezuela, Bolton has emerged as the public face of a policy by dragging into social media, nightly newscasts and press conferences. "I think we're trying to get to the same end result here".

"If something happens to me one day then Donald Trump and Colombian President Ivan Duque will be responsible for everything that is happening to me", he said, adding however that he was in good hands.

"We won't allow a Vietnam in Latin America", Maduro said. The sanctions announced Monday will freeze any assets the state-owned PDVSA has in the United States, and bars USA firms and citizens from doing business with it.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he is willing to negotiate with the opposition and hold early congressional elections, in a concession as opponents plan another big demonstration.

"Donald Trump has without doubt given an order to kill me and has told the government of Colombia and the Colombian mafia to kill me", Maduro told RIA.

Guaido has thus far managed to avoid arrest and the Supreme Court did not strip him of his legislative immunity, though the new investigation could signal that Maduro's administration is moving to take a more punitive approach in the days ahead. Abrams said action against Guaido would be "foolish".

Support from the Venezuelan military is "crucial" to efforts to oust President Nicolas Maduro, opposition leader Juan Guaido wrote in The New York Times on Wednesday.

Guaido, the eldest of six children from a working-class family who emerged from virtual anonymity as a political activist, is recognized as president by the United States and most Western Hemisphere nations.

Opening a case against Guaido comes as global pressure mounts against Maduro's government from the United States, which earlier in the day handed control over Venezuela's USA bank accounts to Guaido.

The U.N. human rights office says security forces in Venezuela detained almost 700 people in just one day of anti-government protests last week and that more than 40 people were killed.

The U.S.is hitting Venezuela's state-owned oil company with sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Maduro to leave office.

Inflation is running at 311,000 percent over the past 12 months, the economy has contracted for five consecutive years and oil output is sinking, deepening a humanitarian crisis that's seen more than 3 million people flee the country.

Maduro called the sanctions "criminal" and vowed to challenge the United States in court.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Citgo can continue to operate - but its earnings must be deposited into a blocked account in the United States. He also demanded that it be shown, where in the constitution of Venezuela, it said that an individual can proclaim himself to be president. The opposition argues Maduro's re-election last May was a sham.

After waves of daily protests in recent years failed to dislodge Maduro, the opposition has adopted a different strategy, said opposition leader and lawmaker Juan Andres Mejia, which is to demonstrate the will to protest without raising expectations among supporters or provoking the government into a violent response. "Americans should not travel to Venezuela until further notice", the United States president said.

Last week, a group of soldiers rose up against Maduro while Venezuela's military attache to Washington deserted the president on Saturday.

The White House said Guaido thanked Trump for committing the U.S. to freedom and prosperity in Venezuela and the region.

As you can imagine, more people are reading The Jerusalem Post than ever before. Guaidó does not yet, however, have control of the military, whose leaders have benefitted greatly from ties with Maduro.
