Drug Bust: Police Warn Mexican Cartels Targeting Australia

U.S. authorities said the illicit cargo - with a street value of AUS$1.29 billion, or US$900 million - was hidden in two shipping containers carrying audio equipment bound for Australia.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the seizure Thursday, saying a January 11 search turned up more than 3,800 pounds of meth, 56 pounds of cocaine and 11 pounds of heroin.

The three containers seized Thursday also contained 55.9 pounds of cocaine and 11.5 pounds of heroin and had a street value of $1.29 billion.

Australian police have arrested six people in Victoria and New South Wales after the biggest seizure of crystal methamphetamine in USA history.

A US-based organised crime syndicate is being investigated over the shipment.

Australian authorities said Friday the joint U.S.

Police were alerted to the alleged drug syndicate's enormous planned import when a country policeman in regional Victoria pulled over a driver and found a small amount of drugs in the auto. We have averted a tsunami of ice to Australia.

Covered in blood, her grandson searched for help and was eventually taken to a hospital, where he died two days later. Malfunctioning e-cigarette batteries have caused hundreds to thousands of similar injuries, U.S. reports say.

The shipment, marked as "loudspeakers", was bound for Australia, the CBP statement said.

Two of the individuals arrested in connection with the crime are confirmed to be Americans, and are now facing charges of attempting to import illegal drugs.

"They are one of the major and most powerful organised crime cartels now operating", Mr Hill said.

Commissioner Hill said police believe Mexican cartels are targeting the country, but the identities of the cartels have not been disclosed.

The Australian investigation unit was made up of the AFP, Victoria Police, the Australian Border Force (ABF), the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and the Department of Home Affairs.

The operation also involved raids in British Columbia on Thursday by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which resulted in the seizure of "a significant quantity" of suspected proceeds of crime, police said.

The previous record of seized methylamphetamine bound for Australia was 1.3 tonnes found in Western Australia in December 2017.
