Amazon May Be Reconsidering Long Island City Headquarters

Amazon may also have a Plan B. One of the twenty finalists for HQ2 was Newark, New Jersey, just across the border from New York City.

At this point there's no official word from Amazon, but it's important to note that the Post is owned by Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO. The report cited two people familiar with the company's thinking.

"The question is whether it's worth it if the politicians in NY don't want the project, especially with how people in Virginia and Nashville have been so welcoming", a person with knowledge of Amazon's plans told the Post. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called it an example of corporate welfare, and Sen.

The congresswoman celebrated The Post's report on Friday, tweeting, "Can everyday people come together and effectively organize against creeping overreach of one of the world's biggest corporations?"

The company has held internal meetings to assess the situation in NY, where elected officials, labor leaders, and community activists are mounting a resistance to the project, two anonymous sources told The Post.

Amazon has not yet closed deals on NY property and thus still has the chance to back away from its initial plan if it wants to.

The person briefed on the matter said that Amazon was still working toward winning approval from NY officials and had not given up on the proposal, but was considering potential alternatives to NY.

Rockets Acquire Iman Shumpert, Kings Get Alec Burks In Three-Way Trade
The deal was apparently built off the foundation of a previously reported Knight/first-round-pick-for-Burks discussion. The 6-6, 205-pound guard was taken with the eighth overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Sacramento Kings out of MI .

"We're focused on engaging with our new neighbors-small-business owners, educators, and community leaders", an Amazon spokeswoman told Barron's in an email message.

Late a year ago, newly elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez railed against the company for getting tax breaks at a time when she bemoaned of crumbling infrastructure.

Amazon hasn't built any structures nor finalized any land leases in NY as of yet, and likely wouldn't until 2020. Spokesman Mike Murphy said it's "unfortunate that the governor is trying to divide the Democratic Party at this crucial and historic time", after the Senate in the past few weeks approved reproductive health rights, gun control measures and protections for transgender New Yorkers and extended the ability of childhood sexual abuse survivors to seek redress in court. "I don't think anyone should assume that this is a fait accompli, and that this is a done deal", Johnson told Business Insider. The company said it will receive performance-based incentives of $1.525 billion from the state of NY, including an average $48,000 for each job it creates.

Van Bramer turned to James Patchett, chief executive officer of the New York City Economic Development Corp., which led the city's efforts to win the Amazon bid.

Each project in NY and Virginia is expected to create 25,000 jobs. In November, the company announced the other half of the HQ2 project would be located in Northern Virginia.

According to Amazon's press release, the company will also receive "performance-based direct incentives of $1.525 billion" for the creation of the jobs. Nashville is getting a 5,000-person operations center, and though the city budget is so strapped public workers were denied a promised raise, this week officials passed a $15 million infrastructure grant for the area Amazon will occupy, the first of $117 million in subsidies for the project.
