Venezuela's Guaido: 'We will do what is necessary'

Opposition leader Jose Manuel Olivares, who is in Cucuta helping coordinate the aid mission, said the idea floated by Toledo to use a mass mobilization of people to get the aid across the border is one of the strategies being considered.

The government of embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has blocked aid deliveries amid rising tensions over opposition plans to bring humanitarian aid into the country.

"Instead of trying to accommodate Maduro through contact groups or dialogue, we urge countries to recognize Juan Guaido as interim president and join us in responding to his call for immediate worldwide humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of the Venezuelan people", Abrams said. Inflation has skyrocketed, and since 2015, more than three million Venezuelans have fled to neighbouring countries due to scarcity of food, jobs and medicine.

"I'd be really disappointed if we didn't have a deal", Scott said. "People, people and more people bringing in humanitarian aid".

"Inhibiting the entry of this aid could be seen as a crime against humanity".

An global group of parliamentarians is urging Venezuela's government to stop the "ongoing harassment" of opposition lawmakers and denouncing "intimidation" of 60 parliamentarians - including 40 who have allegedly faced physical attacks.

The bridge, which connects Cucuta and the city of Urena in Venezuela, remains blocked after the Venezuelan military, earlier this week, placed cargo containers and a tanker lorry across the road surface.

But the aid blockade could lead to troops disobeying Maduro's orders and allowing the much-needed aid to pass.

"Brother, let the aid in". Maduro's security forces used freight containers and a tanker trailer to block the worldwide bridge near where the aid is arriving. "The end of the usurpation will be the end of hunger", he added, as he called for Venezuelans to reject the Maduro government. 'We're advancing in the development of health care for the good of the people'.

Guaido declared himself Venezuela's interim president January 23, maintaining that the constitution gives him that right as head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly because Maduro's re-election should be considered legitimate.

More than 40 nations including the United States, major European powers and most of Latin America have recognised Guaido as the country's rightful head of state.

Guaido maintains that Maduro's second term as president is illegitimate, citing the May 2018 election that faced widespread worldwide condemnation.

Also at the briefing, the State Department's deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will discuss the issue of Venezuela with European Union leaders during his upcoming trip to Europe.

Present at the meeting were representatives from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Britain, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Uruguay, as well as the EU.
