Victor claims $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot in SC

That jackpot also had some mystery as the California winners didn't come forward until about six months later.

The commission said the victor marvelled at every decision they made that got them to the right place at the right time to buy the ticket.

The winning Quick Pick Mega Millions ticket for the October 23 drawing was purchased at a KC Mart convenience store in Simpsonville, South Carolina, officials said. They added that the lucky person has chosen to remain anonymous, meaning the commission won't even reveal whether it was a man or woman.

The commission said the victor "marvels at how every decision made that day brought the victor to the store" including allowing another customer to purchase a Quick Pick Mega Millions lottery ticket first.

"It's good attention and good for the community, you know", KC Mart owner C.J. Patel said at the time. The State of SC will benefit from $61 million that will be collected in income taxes from the victor.

"We are delighted that the victor is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize", Hogan Brown, executive director of the South Carolina Lottery Commission, said.

They were the only victor of the $1.5 billion (£1.1bn) jackpot, but opted to get the prize as one lump sum, meaning they got a reduced amount - but come on, who's complaining about only winning $877m?

Inside Edition went to Simpsonville, South Carolina, where the ticket was purchased, to ask around about the mysterious victor.

Some theorised the victor was on the run from police and feared a background check if he or she won. Others speculated that the winning ticket had been purchased by an office pool and was now the subject of litigation. They had 180 days from the drawing to come forward.

"Finally somebody claimed the ticket".

The statement Monday gave no clue as to why the victor took his or her time to come forward. "Obviously, South Carolina will reap the benefits of that", state House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Murrell Smith said, according to the newspaper.
