This is the Tesla Model Y

This is the Tesla Model Y

And just to remind us that the whole "production hell" thing hasn't put him off electric cars for life, Musk also brought along the Tesla Semi to the Model Y launch - that's the lorry capable of 500 miles on a charge and a Golf GTI-shaming 0-60mph in 5 seconds without a trailer hitched - and the new-generation Roadster.

Musk plans to unveil the auto and offer pricing and other details at a small event at Tesla's design studio in Hawthorne, outside Los Angeles, and it will stream it online starting at 8 p.m. PT (11 p.m. ET).

A dual-motor, all-wheel drive version of the Model Y starts at 51,000 USA dollars while the performance version of the vehicle, which boasts acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour (97 kph) in as little as 3.5 seconds and a top speed of up to 150 miles per hour (241 kph), starts at 60,000 US dollars.

Due to its connection to the Model 3, the Model Y shares about 75% of its components with the vehicle.

Chief executive Elon Musk said a standard-range model priced at $39,000 would be available in 2021.

Musk has promised an easier production ramp of the Model Y (following much-publicised problems with the Model 3) as it shares about three-quarters of its parts with the aforementioned sedan and would need only half the capital expenditures of the sedan. Musk has said that cars fitted with Autopilot hardware will be able to drive themselves completely autonomously in the future. By the time it comes out, Musk emphasized, the company aims to be "feature-complete" with Full Self-Driving, meaning the software will be in place allowing the vehicle to perform an expanded range of automated functions. That changes now, and frankly, the Model Y's importance for Tesla can't be overstated. This vehicle has a range of 320 miles, accelerates to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and can go as fast as 130 mph.

Moving forward. In a note Friday morning, a team of Cowen analysts wrote that the Model Y event "held no surprises" and didn't address many investor concerns. Its battery would have the capacity to last for 230 miles.

With the Model Y, Tesla has finally unveiled the last vehicle in its "S3XY "roadmap". In the USA, Tesla requires a deposit of $2.500 and lists all variants except the basic model "Standard Range".

At tonight's live stream he reconfirmed this expectation: "I think we will sell more Model Y's than S, X and 3 combined", Musk said. Without knowing for sure whether the constraint at Fremont is simply space (which has doubtless been squeezed by the two more or less unusable Model 3 general assembly lines built before the tent-based GA3 line) or paint shop air quality permits, it's impossible to completely rule out Fremont-based North American production and Tesla is staying cagey about manufacturing plans.

"There is clearly a large market for the M3, and likely the Model Y, but this seems to fall short of more aggressive expectations given vehicle prices seem too high, in our opinion", Irwin said. Deliveries are expected to begin in next year. As is often the way with Teslas, it'll be little while before we get the Y in the United Kingdom, but who would bet against there being a glut of orders as soon as they are?
