Google Announces Stadia, It's Gaming Platform for Everyone

Remember that beta test of streaming Assassin's Creed: Odyssey I showed off previous year using a Pixelbook? All Google would say today is that the streaming service will come out in 2019.

Stadia is all about making games more accessible. While a Google press conference might not normally mean a huge amount for gamers, this one may well be worth watching: the company is expected to reveal its gaming plans.

Google wouldn't say how much it will charge users, or whether it will be funded through advertising like most of its other businesses.

Stadia is cloud-based. You can access games for the service through internet browsers, TVs and mobile devices.

Of course, you don't have to use the Stadia controller. The capture button, for sharing and saving footage/screens to YouTube and the Google Assistant button, to immediately access the built-in microphone of the controller to get information on various in-game features integrated by the games' developers.

But Apple Inc's App Store sold about $33 billion worth of games previous year, and the games industry views Amazon.com Inc's Twitch, rather than YouTube, as the most popular video streaming service for content related to video games.

Games: It's unclear which games will be available on Stadia at launch.

Custom tools: A suite of debugging and tuning tools help you get the most out of our platform, from fine-tuning streaming performance to diagnosing GPU crashes. However, Stadia could make split-screen game experiences workable again.

That all said, the reaction from gamers has been a mixed-bag, with many seeing it as nothing more than Google trying to desperately fit in.

Google has already shipped Stadia development hardware to over 100 studios around the world and over 1,000 creatives & engineers are working for the new platform. You can pick up from where the game left off in real time, Polygon reports. Game creators can also take advantage of a zero- to low-latency multiplayer session on a single screen. Back when it was called Project Stream, Stadia showcased that it was possible to stream Assassin's Creed Odyssey reliably and consistently on some very limited hardware, so clearly the tech exists to support modern AAA titles on Stadia. Still, though, the fact that Google has managed to catch a skilled and well-known developer like Jade Raymond is exciting, and we're interested to see where Google goes with the new studio.

At its launch, Google said users would be able to stream games at resolutions of up to 4K at 60 frames per second, and in future, would be able to host games resolutions at 8K. The selection of games will determine how successful Stadia in, but the price is also part of the equation. It is teasing the new logo of Google's "coming soon" gaming hardware.

Sony will be taking a long, hard look at Stadia. Now we know why.
