Lion Air 737 Max plane pilots 'scoured handbook' before crash

China was the first country in the world to suspend all Boeing 737 Max 8 airplanes, followed by more countries after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane on March 10.

"Captain Dickson is a strong advocate for commercial aviation safety and improvements to our National Airspace System, having served as chairman of several industry stakeholder groups and Federal advisory committees", the White House statement said.

Dickson attended the Air Force Academy and was a fighter pilot before flying for Delta.

The Justice Department's criminal division is looking into the Boeing 737 Max 8, though the parameters of that inquiry remain unclear.

Chao said the audit she requested is necessary "to help inform the Department's decision-making and the public's understanding, and to assist the FAA in ensuring that its safety procedures are implemented effectively".

The updates are meant to address how the aircraft's flight control system - MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) - responds to erroneous sensor inputs, the planemaker said https://boeing.mediaroom.com/2019-03-17-Boeing-CEO-Muilenburg-Issues-Statement-on-Ethiopian-Airlines-Flight-302-Accident-Investigation in a statement.

Investigators suspect that incorrect sensor readings feeding into a new automated flight-control system may have played a role in the Indonesian crash, and the Ethiopian plane had a similar, erratic flight path.

The response from some Muslim countries went further, blaming politicians and the media for stoking that hatred. A number of improvised explosive devices found on a vehicle after the shootings were defused by police.

Investigators examining the Indonesian crash want to know how a computer ordered the plane to dive in response to data from a faulty sensor and whether pilots had enough training to respond appropriately.

One day before the deadly crash of a Lion Air plane on October 29 a year ago, pilots flying that Boeing 737 Max 8 lost control of the aircraft - but they were saved by an off-duty colleague riding in the cockpit, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. Three sources discussed them on condition of anonymity.

In the hot seat over its certification of the MAX without demanding additional training and its closeness to Boeing, the FAA has said it is "absolutely" confident in its vetting.

A federal grand jury in Washington sent a subpoena to someone involved in the plane's development seeking emails, messages and other communications, the person told The Associated Press.

The aircraft, which was being operated by a different crew the next day, on October 29, 2018, crashed fewer than 15 minutes after takeoff, killing all 189 passengers and crew on board. Both accidents happened shortly after takeoff. Again, the US waited, becoming one of the last countries to deny the planes permission to fly.

Lawmakers and safety experts are questioning how thoroughly regulators vetted the MAX model and how well pilots were trained on new features.

One company, Norwegian Airlines, has already said it will seek compensation after grounding its MAX aircraft. The company has taken more than 5,000 orders and delivered more than 250 Max jets previous year.
