Plane Crashes Boeing: Company addresses deadly plane crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia

"The crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 8701, a Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, declared an emergency after the aircraft experienced a reported engine problem while departing from Orlando International Airport in Florida about 2:50 p.m. today", the statement said.

MCAS is a key focus of the investigations into the Lion Air disaster and the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 flight on March 10 that killed all 157 people on board.

The airline said one of the pilots reported the engine problem and was directed to make an emergency landing at the airport.

Earlier this month, at least 13 countries grounded the Boeing 737 Max 8 shortly after Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crashed just minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

USA aviation authorities will defend their certification methods for new planes before lawmakers Wednesday, two weeks after grounding the Boeing 737 MAX over two deadly crashes in less than five months. Pilots were not trained in how to operate the system, and a warning light that could notify pilots of errors with it was shipped to airlines as an optional extra. Two of the jets have crashed in the past six months in Indonesia and Ethiopia with deadly consequences, and investigators are examining the role of flight control software that Boeing created to prevent aerodynamic stalls.

The Federal Aviation Administration plans to significantly revamp its oversight of airplane construction this summer after questions were raised about how it manages inspections done by the industry, according to testimony prepared for a Senate subcommittee hearing Wednesday.

Neither of the two ongoing crash investigations have indicated any performance issues with the plane's CFM International Leap-1B engines.

Boeing is this week briefing airlines on software and training updates for the MAX, with more than 200 global airline pilots, technical experts and regulators due in Renton, Washington, where the plane is built. The plane was taken to a maintenance hangar after landing. The two crashes killed a combined 346 people.

Lion Air 737 Max plane pilots 'scoured handbook' before crash
One company, Norwegian Airlines, has already said it will seek compensation after grounding its MAX aircraft. The company has taken more than 5,000 orders and delivered more than 250 Max jets previous year .

At the heart of the controversy surrounding the 737 Max is MCAS, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System.

The FAA said it is investigating Tuesday's incident.

After two deadly crashes in five months, Boeing is embarking on a campaign to restore confidence in the 737 Max so that its best-selling jet can return to the skies. Most other major worldwide regulators took the step a day or two after the March 10 Ethiopian crash.

Indonesian airline Garuda has asked to cancel orders for 49 MAX aircraft, citing passenger concerns about the plane, although analysts said the deal was already in question before the Ethiopian crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating but the emergency was not related to anti-stall software that is suspected as a cause of the fatal crashes.

The pilots underwent a crisis simulation test to recreate the final moments of Lion Air Flight 610, which nosedived into the Java Sea shortly after take-off in October 2018.

The Ethiopian transport ministry spokesman explained that Ethiopia has led the investigation into the crash with assistance from USA and French investigators as part of the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
