Auger-Aliassime falls to Isner in Miami

Three-time champion Federer beat 20th seed Anderson 6-0 6-4 in a match lasting just under an hour and a half.

The defending champion moved closer to another title by hitting 21 aces on Friday and defeating 18-year-old Canadian qualifier Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).

Both players held serve over the next two games before Isner broke the Canadian to cut the set deficit to 5-4.

'The venue is absolutely fantastic, ' said Isner, a big football fan. I highlighted yesterday that Federer has had considerable success on the South African's serve in previous meetings and this continued on Thursday night. That's just very tough to swallow'.

"It's going to be, I think, a good match", Pliskova said of the looming matchup with Halep.

Roger Federer and Denis Shapovalov will battle in the Miami Open semifinals on Friday.

"This is definitely a match I've been looking forward to my entire life, a dream come true, to play a semifinal, with the stakes so high against your idol", Shapovalov said.

Nancy Pelosi rejects Mueller report classified briefing
New York Democrat Jerry Nadler delivered opening remarks at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Google on December 11, 2018. He and Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who appointed Mueller, were at the Justice Department again on Sunday.

The big-serving Isner is now 9-0 in tiebreaks this tournament.

Auger-Aliassime had never played in Miami before, and now he becomes the youngest semifinalist in tournament history, younger than Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras ever were when they reached this stage. It was the first tiebreak Auger-Aliassime lost in the tournament.

Halep, who rallied from 5-1 down to take the second set, will try to reach her first South Florida final and reclaim the top spot by defeating the victor of a later all-Czech contest between world number five Karolina Pliskova and Marketa Vondrousova.

He was scheduled to return to action at a clay-court event in Morocco starting April 8, but said after Friday's match that he will likely skip that event and start his clay season at the Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo the following week.

Medvedev halted the bleeding with a hold at 2-1 but there was no stopping the fourth-seeded Federer who claimed a second break to go up 5-2 and then had an easy hold to seal a business-like victory. "Everybody helping me along the way is a nice feeling to actually being able to celebrate wins and losses". "I'll need to wear some tennis sunglasses so I don't see him (smiling) so I see blurry or something, or I see someone else on the other side".

"It's fantastic", the 33-year-old told the crowd after his victory. "It's pretty much in my head and I'm happy that I'm in this position again".

The women's final Saturday will match No. 5 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic against No. 12 Ashleigh Barty of Australia.
