Sask. unemployment rate lowest in four years

The U.S.economy added 196,000 jobs in March, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.8%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. Conversely, modest declines in some service sectors, notably health care (-20.0k), business support services (-14.3k) were offset by small gains in other categories, leaving the sector as a whole down 8.8k net positions.

The annualized growth rate for the last three months (January, February, March) compared with the prior three months (October, November, December) was just under 3.0 percent. The jobless rate was flat at 5.8 percent.

Manufacturing employment changed little for the second month in a row (down 6,000 in March, following a gain of 1,000 in February). The unemployment rate held steady at 5.8% as slightly fewer Canadians engaged with labour markets.

By demographic group, there was a drop in the employment-to-population ratio (EPOP) for black workers by 0.3 percentage points to 57.9 percent, the lowest since last April. Construction employment changed little in March, adding 16,000 jobs.

The lowest rate was in the Saint John and St. Stephen region, at 6.6 per cent, down from 7.8 per cent previous year.
