Muscle-flexing: North Korea slams Bolton for 'stupid' remarks: KCNA

A North Korean Foreign Ministry official has said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was "talking nonsense" in suggesting that working-level negotiations between the countries would be finished by the year's end, reported state-run KCNA.

"If an inter-Korean summit takes place, a related message could be delivered" to the North's leader, the presidential official told reporters, when asked to comment on the CNN report.

"The development of the weapon system serves as an event of very weighty significance in increasing the combat power of the People's Army", Kim said in a statement after the test.

Pompeo's recent attitude on talks between the United States and North Korea has been dismissive, and he has argued North Korea has already committed to everything that the U.S. wanted without getting sanctions relief, and the USA expects them to comply with the demands.

South Korea's unification minister said he will push for a South Korea-style temple stay program at a Buddhist temple in North Korea. "The weapon must be something that can pose a threat or incite terror" and therefore is likely to contain some new technology or capability.

On Thursday, North Korea said it had test-fired a new type of "tactical guided weapon", its first such test in almost half a year, and demanded that Pompeo be excluded from future negotiations.

Its report gave no details of the weapon.

"According to Lawrence, there is now little question the American side was responsible for the failure in Hanoi, where President Trump handed Kim a sheet of paper listing terms in Korean and English which Reuters" Leslie Broughton and David Brunnstrom termed, "a blunt call for the transfer of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and bomb fuel to the United States", Lawrence reports. It said the test was conducted by the Academy of Defense Science.

"It's not as flagrant a violation as an [intercontinental ballistic missile] test".

Kwon said Pompeo had made "reckless remarks hurting the dignity of our supreme leadership", apparently referring to his agreeing to the characterisation of Kim as a "tyrant" at a USA congressional hearing last week.

It also comes as the Kremlin announced Thursday that Kim will visit Russian Federation later this month at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin.

Last week, Kim gave a speech to the country's parliament, the Supreme People's Assembly, in which he emphasized that the country would make its domestic economy self-reliant, in the face of worldwide sanctions.

Those moves are seen as a way for North Korea to gain leverage after the February Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi broke down without a deal.

Tourism has not resumed, owing to worldwide sanctions and restrictions against activities that could help North Korea earn foreign currency, possibly for its nuclear weapons program. Articles appear on euronews.com for a limited time.
